Big Bear blooms with Fall Colors

Autumn in Big Bear, San Bernardino Mountains The fall colors in Big Bear are finally here. This is a cool time of year when the colder night temperatures make the trees change bright yellow, orange and red. For Southern Californians who live in the city, this phenomenon is not as wide spread as in the northern parts of the state as our weather is so stable year round. The onset of winter makes this time of year a wonderful weekend getaway to the San Bernardino mountains and Big Bear.

There are 2 great places to start your vacation to see fall colors in Big Bear. The Discovery Center in Fawnskin, on the north side of the lake offers free guided nature walks to help you uncover hidden gems in the forest and surrounding areas. The nature walks run just 30 minutes every Saturday and Sunday and are designed to show you the wildlife of the area, and plant life and how this part of the mountain top was settled. Nature walks are free and are designed for all levels of physical ability. The Big Bear Discovery Center also offers craft classes and story time for the younger kids to inspire them to learn about the forest, the animals and all the things that are in our backyard.

Another wonderful place to start your hikes through the forest, is at the ranger stations. Forest rangers track which trees are changing and keep constant journals on which hiking trails offers the best hikes for this time of year, or anytime of year. The hiking trails are rated for your level of physical ability and the rangers offer trail guides and maps to help you through the forest. The online guide to hiking will help you get started exploring our forest Forest Service Guide to Hikes.

Our Mammoth resort offers a wonderful Fall Colors Guide to The Eastern Sierra Mountains which explains a lot about why trees change colors. It was written so that we all can understand this nature miracle.

Prices on lodging are very inexpensive as this is a quiet time of the year. Take a vacation or sick day and make it a 3 night stay on this coming weekend before all the holiday rush starts. Come on up the mountain to Big Bear for a little rest and relaxation and to enjoy this beautiful time of the year.
