Activities in Big Bear
Is it possible that summer is even more fun than winter in Big Bear? That’s a matter of taste, but one thing is for sure. The outdoor action never stops up here.
AERIAL ACTS --Don’t miss the chance to ride the ski lifts for thrilling views and a mountaintop snack break. Ahhh…
PARASAILING – Soar safely over the lake with a team based out of the Pine Knot Landing marina.
SWIMMING - Swimming isn’t a big activity around the lake, due to the fact that the manmade basin contains certain underwater hazards. There are a few beaches, though, so ask the Discovery Center for best places to make a splash.
GOLF- You may have noticed that broad, beautiful swath of green on the map next to Bear Mountain Resort/ Moonridge. Yes, it’s a golf course, a stunning location where you can play nine beautiful holes at 7000 feet. The course gurus boast that in the thin atmosphere your ball will soar like a bald eagle. Just don’t hit one -- a bald eagle, that is.
TENNIS -Find courts at some of the hotels and lodges, or try public facilities at Meadow Park. Pros and pros-in-training may want to reserve a spot at the Big Bear Tennis Ranch in nearby Sugarloaf. Be aware that this is not technically in Big Bear.
HORSEBACK RIDING - Because the region was a both a mining and tourist hotspot in the 19th century, many excellent trails and bridle paths weave through the mountains. The only facility renting horses, however, is the Baldwin Lake stables and petting zoos, where kids can experience close encounters of the cute kind. Experienced guides will lead you over the historic Pacific Crest Trail for on one hour, two hour, half day or sunset rides. They even suggest private guided tours for “special occasions.” Pop the question on a pony, perhaps?
