Fleur Du Lac Mansion
Fleur du Lac, as it is called now, was originally owned by Henry J. Kaiser from San Francisco. Kaiser was in industrialist and is famous for starting companies many of which still exist today. Kaiser Permanente, Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Steel. Sitting right on the water, Fleur du Lac became most famous as the house
used in "The Godfather II" movie. The mansion was rennovated
in early 2000, and has a distinctive pine wood lodge flair, but
with a more modern style. It is fairly typical of the architecture of the homes that are around the lake, and many which are available as Lake Tahoe home rentals
, for a vacation. Fleur du Lac is permanently closed to the public. It is private residences.
Kaiser loved Lake Tahoe and his boats. In 1938 Kaiser had a crew of 300 men build this famous estate on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. Known for getting things done that were considered impossible, Kaiser had a crew of 300 working in eight hour shifts, 24 hours a day, building on the 15 acre piece of property.The estate was completed in 30 days in order to be the party venue for the grand opening of the Hoover Damn, another one of his projects.
The property originally consisted of 17 homes, 5 of which were owned by the men who had worked together to build the Hoover Damn. The orginal boathouse was a yacht house and Kaiser is famous for his love of wood boats especially hydroplanes. He was partners with Howard Hughes in the Spruce Goose, another project that was considered 'impossible". The When you enter the foyer, you are in the room
for entertainment. The large living room has a fireplace,
and more of the distinctive pine "lodge pole" architecture with cascading windows
and views of the water.
In the 1960's portions of the estate were used widely by the public including use as a school house. The house rose to fame when it became associated with Coppola's "The Godfather II" movie. The wedding scene
and the horse head scenes are legendary, as is the property itself.The property has been convereted to 22 chateaux as large as 6.000 sq. feet. The boat house and former yacht club have also been rennovated and are adorned with a log "lodge" style interior to complement the rugged rock exterior.
Visitors to Lake Tahoe are often glamorized by Fleur Du Lac and its history. We get a lot of calls about Fleur Du Lac. They do not do weddings or events inside or outside. The resiences are private and not available for rent as the property is completely closed to the public. You no longer can see any portion of the estate from the street either, however some portions of the estate can be seen from the waterside. However, there are no boat tours that we know of.
A long time ago, the estate was used for weddings and events. There are similar Lake Tahoe luxury rentals
