Squaw Valley Vacations

Lake Tahoe Skiers Squaw Valley is the most prestigious ski resort in California. Know for the 1960 Olympics, the Squaw of yesteryear, is not the resort of today. Modern, with a contemporary village at the base, and plenty of upscale lodging, hotels and restaurants, Squaw Valley rivals the ski resorts in Colorado, yet it is less expensive and less crowded. Did we say anything about the mountain terrain? Read on.

Squaw is tucked in between the Granite Mountains on the North Lake Tahoe west side and if it weren't for the torch landmarks, you might drive right pass the understated entrance. As you approach through the gates, you will be captivated by the mountains, the horse property and trails, and overall lack of density. What you see is a well thought out resort to spend your vacation days and you will know you have 'arrived'.

The Village which sits at the base of the slopes is composed of several different properties that are hotels and the new 'condo-hotel' style. There are restaurants, shops, bars and services in the walk streets below.

Squaw Valley rivals the ski resorts in Colorado, and it is less expensive and less crowded.

Almost every weekend there is an activity, band, concert, culinary event or family activity taking place to animate the time off the slopes. The base of the infamous Tram / Cable Car is there and it is ready to whisk skiers and snowboarders, camera buffs and non skiers to mid mountain. The 'hang' from the cables up the mountain is unmatched by any resort in Tahoe, let alone any resort in the US. Mid mountain there is a swimming pool open all year round with very heated water and an ice rink in case you need to burn off some energy.

Squaw is known for its terrain and by our standards, has the most interesting, challenging skier terrain for all levels, but especially more advanced runs of all the ski resort in Lake Tahoe... but no worries, there is more than enough beginner and intermediate runs to make your legs burn. Squaw also now owns Alpine Meadows, a smaller and quieter place which is very well run, and this resort is just around the corner but outside those nice torch lit gates. Alpine Meadows is in Tahoe City which is the town most people think of when they think of "North Lake Tahoe." But it is not the only place to stay, dine or recreate. Nearby is the cutest little western town called Truckee, and worth the 15 minute drive along the Truckee River. Here you will be swept back in time to when Tahoe was part of the California gold rush era and riding horses preceded driving cars.

When you plan your vacations in Squaw Valley, plan on 4 nights in order to take in all that there is on the west side of Lake Tahoe. Anything less and you'll be agonizing that you didn't have enough time to do it all.
