Backcountry Skiing in Tahoe

There are few sports as challenging as backcountry skiing, and rightly so. From the very outset, the goal of a backcountry skier is to find some of the remotest and most inhospitable mountainside and conquer it. That's a tall order, and not for the faint of heart. But the good news is there are a few sites in Lake Tahoe where the backcountry community has taken root.

Most of the peaks and trails in Lake Tahoe have backcountry access for those who want to get off the beaten path. Round Top and Carson Pass are two great locations for backcountry skiing. Mount Rose is a great climb with several imposing down hills, too. One of the Lake Tahoe favorites is Monument Peak, which has a terrific trail to Gardnerville. If you're looking for something more gentle try regular cross country instead. It's the more family friendly xc skiing and perfect for all ages. Especially great for those whose bones just aren't what they used to be.
It's very important to note that backcountry skiing is not for beginners, ever. That being said, there are all kinds of trails of all levels. These mountains are often in harder to reach places, and are not regularly patrolled by safety crews or even other visitors. What makes this special is the remote feel you get when you go "off piste" and into the forest. Always back country with someone and only the most experienced skiers or those with plenty of backup should consider backcountry skiing. So even kids should be supervised.

For easier terrain, where the trails are groomed, and more traveled, go cross country skiing.
The great thing about these trails is that the backcountry trails in Lake Tahoe are also used for hiking trails in the summer. This is just one more great adventure that makes Lake Tahoe the place for your vacation. Have fun.
