Alabama Hills Recreation Area - Map

Alabama Hills is famous for 2 things, 1) Spaghetti Westerns from the 1950's and 2) Mt. Whitney. Seems that in the early 40s-50s when western movies were a big deal, the road to Mt. Whitney was discovered and the rock formations, look incredibly like, well any typical desert scene. Very much like The Flintstones. The same road is the road up to Mt. Whitney Trail Head. It is a beautiful scenic drive up to the trail head, and there is a little cafe so you can stop and wet your whistle. Bring a camera. It is a fantastic view. Mt. Whitney Portal Road is in the center of Lone Pine. Just go due west... and keep on driving. It's worth it.
