Ansel Adams Wilderness

The Ansel Adams Wilderness was established in 1985. The recreation area covers 228,500 acres in the Inyo and Sierra National Forests. It covers the area just south Lee Vining and June Lake and north of Mammoth Lakes. It borders Yosemite National Park on the West and goes across Highway 395 to the White Mountains. Ansel Adams was a local to the area, and besides his mark on the wilderness, you can see his photography throughout Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra. In fact, if you're staying in a Mammoth Condo rental, you may want to venture out to Lee Vining and see some of the photography sold in the stores around Mono Lake. His family still resides in the area and we're very lucky to have such a naturalist help to preserve this pristine area.
