4th of July in Mammoth
From the hometown parade down Main Street, to the Footloose Freedom Mile Run, Independence Day in Mammoth is one big party. Each year the town of Mammoth Lakes goes all out to create a 4th of July in Mammoth that is a fun family experience... and memorable. This year is no different!. 4th of July activities start on July 1 and run all week long with the majority of events on Friday July 4th starting at 7:00AM with the annual Pancake Breakfast fund raiser by the Lions Club. It is followed by the Footloose Freedom Mile and the Parade.
The Pancake Breakfast has been a tradition for years to raise money by the Lions Club for their work with the visually impaired. The breakfast is town wide, held right on Old Mammoth Road, and it's all you can eat!. They have their grills flapping jacks, bacon and sausage and coffee all for one low price. You can bring your friends, make friends and it is very social. Everyone is so friendly, you may even want to put your chair next to their's on the parade route.
The breakfast is followed by the Freedom Mile run sponsored by Footloose, who also sponsors City Concierge. It's a friendly one mile run starting at 9:00 AM around Mammoth and takes you around Old Mammoth right back to the parade route. The Parade starts at 11:00. It starts on Lake Mary Road and travels down Main Street and turns the corner at Old Mammoth Road. For best seating you'll want to take your beach chairs and get them on the curb earlier. Be prepared to get wet, as if it is hot, the fire trucks might cool you off.
Mono County Arts sponsors an annual art festival in the park as well. Grumpy's Restaurant a long time sponsor of City Concierge will have their annual Hot Dog Eating Contest and Summer Bash party. How many dogs can you eat for breakfast? It's fun and Grumpy's gives away great prizes.
The day culminates with fireworks over Crowley Lake at Sunset. Crowley is just outside of Mammoth. Please park anywhere you can, but legally. Many people go early and do a tailgate party so they can get the best viewing spots. Some are right in Crowley, some are along the side of the road (off the road please!) in the empty dirt lots, or by the power station. You can also get paid parking right at Crowley marina. The advantage... you'll hear the music timed to the fireworks if you're there which makes the experience even more grand.
In The Village at Mammoth, there will be free concerts going on Friday July 4 and July 5. They also do a low flying firework show (permitting approvals) right over the gondola. If you come for more than a week, a popular double headers is the Mammoth Food and Wine Experience
this year begins on July 11-12 where you can taste food and wine pairings, and it culminates with a wine walk on Sunday July 13, truly a highlight. Check it out!
It's great to be out of the city and try something new, and you will soon find why families return every year to Mammoth over the 4th of July. Mammoth is such a great place to be and doing something different.
