Fishing Season in Mammoth

Fishing in Mammoth is fun for the whole family Merry Fishmas! That's what we say around Mammoth when fishing season starts. Fishing in Mammoth is a big deal, almost like a holiday. Mono County fishing season is from the last Saturday in April to November 15. Opening weekend is a big deal in Mammoth and you are going to want to get your boat out on Crowley Lake at 5:30 AM to get the first catch . If you love big juicy trout, then you'll want to get out on our lakes early in the morning.

Every year the Department of Fish and Game fill the lakes with brown and rainbow trout which are native to Mammoth. The town also puts in 1000s of pounds of our home grown Alpers Trout so the lakes and streams in Mammoth are stocked, to make your fishing expedition exciting.

Early season you will find anglers at Crowley Lake and Convict Lake and as the snow melts the lakes in the Mammoth. Mammoth has 6 big lakes that you can drive to, and several more that you can only hike to. Of course there is also lots of stream fishing as well. The best way to see the lakes that you can only hike to, is to either hire a guide, or trust yourself with a map and a few pointers from the forest service.

A multitude of lakes, rivers and creeks are stocked with rainbows, brooks and German browns anxious to take the bait. You've got catch and release in some areas, such as Hot Creek in the scenic Long Valley. Fly-fishing is prime along the San Joaquin River in the Red's Meadow/Devils Postpile area, and on secluded ranches, such as Alpers Ranch or Hot Creek Ranch. Your best source for real guidance is with one of the bait and tackle stores in the town. They will know where the fish are running. Don't forget, you will need a fishing license.

Along with all the fishing comes the fishing derbies. This is a fun way for you to try your luck and winning the biggest fish of the day, week, or derby. Depending on the time of year, there will be different derbies and it's worth checking out as the prizes can be quite hefty. Here is some additional information on fishing in Mammoth. Have fun.
