Well your prayers have been answered. The snow is already falling on Mammoth Mountain. Yes, Ullr the snow god has been summoned by an avid Mammoth Mountain fellow, and we're going to get more natural snow. In the meantime though, snow showers are being felt every night as the evening temperatures have been quite cold and the snow guns are going. So the weather in Mammoth may be sunshine and blue bird skies during the day, but snowing at night!
At last count 47 runs were open, all 3 lodges were operating, and no one is complaining. We've also heard that people are doing activities they have never been able to do before, such as skate on Yosemite Lake, or for that matter, skate on any of the lakes in Mammoth. Sorry you have to bring your own skates or get them from the Ice Rink rental shop. This is how one man is helping Mammoth get natural snow. We hope you will also do your snow dance.
Ann from Pasadena told us that she was out every day skiing and was surprised at how wonderful the conditions were in spite of the California drought season. No snow doesn't seem to be hindering activities either. If you have seen a photos, you will see that the runs are covered, it's just a little... well... bare on the sides. Depending on who's voodoo you believe, the natural snow is supposed to hit mid January. There are some important events you need to start thinking about.
Presidents Weekend - February 17-20 - typically the most busy time of the year and much of the slopeside lodging is already gone in anticipation.
Ski Week - February 20 -26 - this is the time that Southern California Schools have semester break and everyone comes up to Mammoth for some snow and sunshine.
