The Funniest Event In Mammoth

Pond Skim is back at Mammoth Mountain on April 21, 2012 and launches the largest on the snow party for Spring including concert events that go into the evening. Every year 50 lucky contestants try to "skim" across the Olympic size pool of freezing cold water to grab a chance at the gold prize. Skiers and Riders start at the top of Chair 16 at Canyon Lodge and pick up enough speed to ... glide across the pool of water without falling in. It is hysterical. Costumes are encouraged.

In recent past years, this crowd pleaser has seen the likes of gorillas, clowns, half naked snowboarders, bikini clad women and some die hards try their luck at making it across the 100 meter pool of 32 degree water. Dug out of the snow and lined with plastic, the swimming pool is quite long, and it takes a great deal of precision, balance, and sheer guts to make it across without falling and dumping one's self into the pool. For those that make it across, they have a chance at the grand prize and sometimes get points for "style" like the Olympics.

Here is our collection of Mammoth pond skim photos from past years. The spectator event is filled with live music, food specials, fun and games. It definitely is a fun way to spend time on the snow. If you're not already planning on being in Mammoth, then this is a great reason to kick of Spring Fest and start enjoying the sun and fun at Mammoth Mountain resort. Registration starts at 11:00AM and the show is at 2:00 PM at Canyon Lodge.
