Bishop Mule Days Rides Again

Mule Days Every Memorial Day weekend since 1969, Bishop California, a little town known to many visitors to the Eastern Sierra except fisherman, hosts their annual Wild West rodeo called Mule Days. Bishop roars with this yearly carnival that is part festival, country western concert, local parade, food fun, rodeo all celebrating the mule. The horse packing stations and trip outfitters in the Sierra Nevada area use this event to start off the packing season, but families use this for a great way to spend the three day weekend. What began as just the locals getting together to test their riding skills, has grown into an even filled with world class fun.

There is no way to actually describe Mule Days. You will find no other event that celebrates the mule in the world! Over the five days of the event, there are 14 shows featuring over 800 mules with their trainers, riders and packers. Thousands of fair goers fill the stands and bleachers at the Tri-County Fairgrounds and the Mike Boothe Arena to watch the events and visit the exhibitors. The fourteen mule shows consist of: Western, youth, English, cattle working, gaited, coon jumping, racing, musical tires, gymkhana, packing, shoeing, chariot racing, team roping and driving.

The Wild West Show and Rodeo is a must see event

In addition to competitive events, Mule Days has many other featured events to expand the experience. Each year there is an assortment of Country Music singers and stars taking the stage starting Thursday night, and on Saturday, spectators take to the streets in Bishop to watch the longest running non-motorized parade in the U.S. There's also dances and an arts and crafts show, BBQ food booths all with that "Annie Get Your Gun" feel.

Mule people are determined to prove that anything a good horse can do, a good mule can do better. From trail riding to show classes, mules can do it all with the grace unique to these animals. Steer roping and penning, an event normally reserved for quarter horses, is another highlight of Mule Days. Cowboys will have the opportunity to prove their roping and riding skills astride some of the best working mules in the United States.

All taking place at the foot of the beautiful Eastern Sierra, this Wild West show is a must see event. The town of Bishop gets packed for the Mule Days event. We encourage to get your rental lodging early if you want to stay in one of the hotels in Bishop. Otherwise, you may consider getting one of the Mammoth rentals, and then driving down. Parking is easier than getting a room!
