Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail Supply Restocking

With extended hikes, climbs and backcountry expedition along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, the John Muir Trail or any of the trails across the Inyo to the Sierra, you may need to repack your pack especially if you forgot something. There are many ways to calculate how much you need to carry. Check with a guidebook to be sure you know the formula.

There are two small stores on the trail at
Red's Meadow
and
Tuolumne Meadows
.
The best town to re-supply in is Bishop, located roughly halfway between Whitney Portal and Red's Meadow. The closest post office to the trail is in Mono Hot Springs, also located about halfway along the trail.

There are three ways to resupply when hiking along the John Muir Trail or Pacifc Crest Trail:

1. Arrange for a packer or a friend to bring food to you on the trail,
2. Mail a food package to yourself at a post office near the trail, or
3. Hike out to a store in a nearby town.
To mail yourself a package, address the box:

P.O., State, Zip Code
HOLD UNTIL (date)

The post office is legally obligated to hold a package for only ten days. Please check with the individual office for pertinent details.
