ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS, October 2006

Oh, the weather outside is frightful... you know the tune. Looks like winter is not far behind. This week snow is expected at the 7000 foot level so the town of Mammoth Lakes should get a dusting. It is not sticking, but it sure is chilly. The trees are starting to turn from bright green to yellow and in the next week or so, should jump to red before the breeze tosses the leaves. It seems hard to think about winter now, but Christmas bookings are underway, and be sure to read the notes below. Fishing season remains open till November 15 and most of the lodging companies maintain summer prices till Thanksgiving, so if you are planning on coming up this month or in November be sure to take advantage of the lower prices. So When Ya Driving Up?

Mono Lake during a Fall Sunset Fall Colors

Through 1st of November

You hear a lot of things about the changing of the trees and atmosphere as the Sierras chill down for winter. Mid October to the 1st of November is the prime time viewing to see the trees on the mountainside change. There are spectacular walks among the forest, hikes and bike rides that will take you where the colors get even more amazing such as Rock Creek. This picture shows the sunset at Mono Lake during fall. It's a great time to come up and relax for a few days, exercise, or fish as the season is open till mid November. Be sure to get a map of the best viewing when you come.
