The big news is that
the ski area is scheduled to open this coming Thursday. The groomers have
been making snow since Thursday, Oct. 26. Yessss! There is nothing like
the blast of snow to get excited about winter. Snowmaking is a delicate,
dangerous and highly specialized process - a science, of dry air, and
cocktail recipe of humidity and temperature. A temp of around 34 and a
low relative humidity of around 20 percent is required. At 20 degrees
Mammoth can make 1 acre foot of snow per hour. According to Clifford Mann,
director of snowmaking at MMSA, "We generally would want at least
a 6 to 10 inch base of snow (manmade or natural) on a given run in order
to open it - depending on each run's unique terrain and steepness."
Sounds like a good way to get some early season runs in before the crowds
hit. Value Season lift tickets - ski Nov. 9-21 for $63/day. Get them at the Main Lodge ticket counter. Opening Celebration Nov. 11 at Main Lodge featuring: * Champagne toast Organizer: Mammoth
