When driving along Highway 395 North of Mammoth is the entrance to the eastside of Yousemite National Park and the city of Lee Vining home to Mono Lake. To the south of Mammoth is popular fishing haven Bishop. Each year on Memorial Day they have a funny rodeo weekend called Mule Days which is worth the trip. Lake Tahoe Area Map Lake Tahoe seems confusing but is not when you remember that the border between California and Nevada runs right down the middle of the lake. Going clockwise, on the northwest "California side" is Squaw Valley ski resort in a suburb called Olympic Valley, Right next to Squaw is Alpine Meadows, and Homewood ski resorts. All three are in the Tahoe City vicinity. Right on the border of California is the Northstar At Tahoe ski resort is in the city of Truckee which is just a few miles from the actual lake. On the North east side of Northstar is Kings Beach and then the border to Nevada. Incline Village is next to Kings Beach and is on the west shore so it is in Nevada. Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose are in the city of Incline Village, Nevada. The Reno International Airport is also to the north of the lake in Nevada. The airport is just 45 minutes by car and the best place to fly into. In Nevada on the south west side of the lake is Zephyr Cover, a small area with elegant housing. Just south is the famous Heavenly Valley which sits right on the border of the city of Stateline Nevada and the largest of all the cities South Lake Tahoe California. Continuing clockwise you can drive all the way around Lake Tahoe, a must do only in the summer for 1st time visitorsPalm Springs Map Big Bear Lake California is located just 2 hours from Los Angeles depending on where you started. It takes about 45 minutes to climb to 7500 ft. elevation where you are on the rim of the world. Lake Arrowhead resort is located just west of Big Bear. It is home to Bruin Woods, a UCLA Family Camp. Big Bear has 2 ski resorts Snow Summit and Bear Mountain which are havens to locals in Los Angeles. Palm Springs is known for its dry desert climate. It is just 45 minutes from the base of Big Bear. The Palm Springs hotels are mostly in the downtown are. Palm Desert is about 40 minutes further than Palm Springs, and the cities of Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage are in between. The drive along highway 111 through Palm Springs to Palm Desert is loaded with restaurants and shops in each of the downtown areas. Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert are especially loaded with stores. If you're coming to golf, you're in heaven. This desert community has more golf courses than you can play in a month! |
